南华早报：中国风水申遗第一人徐韶杉风水大师

编辑语：2006年6月9日，中国风水申遗第一人徐韶杉风水大师和南京的专家教授、研究者、新闻媒体等在南京搜房网直播风水申遗并发表宣言--中国民间风水申遗小组成立。随即开展一系列的活动，其中引人关注是耗资巨大的大型纪录片《风水中国》和近期完成的《周易》系统工程---《周易正解》。将《周易》具体字、词、数来源和周易所使用具体方法将历史真实展现在世人，这是自孔子之后时隔2500年后第一次，对推进国学发展和《周易》的申遗起到积极作用。

 A master recalls his journey of discovery about fung shui

Fung shui master Xu Shaoshan is the first man in China to try to have the ancient practice recognised as part of the world’s culturaI heritage．Mr Xu．41,teIIs Lilian Zhang about his approach to fung shui and what he has done to preserve it．

How did you get interested in fung shui?

I majored in English at Nanjing Normal University．but I was greatly influenced in fung shui by my parents，who taught Chinese at university．I began to study Zhou Yi,the Book of Changes，which is the origin of fung shui，when I was at high school.I was against those ideas at first because they were commonly regarded as superstitions．But after I bought and read alot of relevant books。I changed my mind and got interested in it．So I decided to study fung shui and have continued for 20 years．

I even spent eight years learning from a Zhou Yi master in Chongqing(重庆)．who has spent his life studying the classic book It was not only me．A lot of people from home and abroad visited him and  have him as a teacher．And when China set up an expert committee under the Ministrv of Construcfion for fung shui in 2005．I was invited to be a part of it and am now the general secretary．

What's your understanding of fung shui?

I think fung shui is a kind of practical knowledge regarding how to properly arrange people,architecture and the environment in time and space．

Appropriate arrangements make better use of space and benefit people’s health．Folk sayings link fung shui with wealth，suggesting that if you become healthier．you will certainly work better and earn much more money．

Why did you start applying for its world heritage status?

Some Chinese experts visited South Korea and their scholars claimed fung shui belonged to them．The South Korean scholars decided to apply for world cultural heritage status for fung shui and I think their govemment supported them． They also did this for the Dragon Boat Festival．Now we have about 10 experts，including both Chinese and non—Chinese，who are drafting a report on why China should.
